The World Meteorological Organization assigns names to hurricanes, typhoons and tropical storms. From 1954 to the present, 53 Atlantic hurricanes and one tropical storm have been "retired." These storms were so intense, damaging, or deadly that their name will never be used again for a new storm. These storms are listed below in order by year. An alphabetical list follows below it.
